About Emily

My name is Emily J. Wallace. I live in Pendleton, Indiana. I am a gourd artist. I was first taken in by this craft in 2004. I went to the Indiana State Gourd Show in Kokomo & was hooked. I have been crafting gourds since then. I love to sit down & put pencil to gourd & create designs. I never know what I will end up with!

About Darla

My name is Darla K. Short. I live in Flatrock, Indiana. I started crafting gourds in 2006 after attending a gourd show. I like to bead, burn & paint gourds. I have also recently started chip carving on gourds.

About gourds

Gourds are in the same family as pumpkins, squash & melons. Gourds are not edible but have been used as utensils & containers by history. They have a hard shell. Some gourds are thicker than others & are varied in color, shape & size. There are many different varieties of gourds. For more information on gourds in your area contact your state gourd society.

Getting started

Usually an idea forms & then a gourd is picked out to represent the design. I draw the picture or design on the gourd in pencil. Once I am satisfied with the picture then I burn the pencil lines. After the lines are burnt I decide what's next-it could be to dye, paint, cut, carve or embellish the gourd.
